Kevin,
In addition to what has already been said, here are a few more things
to consider when deciding on which transceiver to get.
Do you see yourself buying a handheld GPS unit anytime soon? If so,
the NAV is probably not necessary.
Do you want to be able to plug your headset into the transceiver? If
so, you'll need to add about $60 to the price of any Icom COM
transceiver - they don't come with the headset adapter. The Icom
NAV-COM transceivers do come with the headset adapter. The JHP (JRC)
and the Yaesu NAV-COM and COM both come standard with a headset
adapter.
If you are considering the Yaesu, I would stick with the Aviator Pilot
(NAV-COM). The Aviator Pro II (COM) only has a 3.5 watt transmitter
versus 5.0 watts for just about everything else.
What features are important to you? The JHP500/520 has a cool feature
that allows you to monitor two different frequencies at the same time
(i.e. ATIS and Ground). If size matters, the Yaesu is a good value in
a small package, and the new Icom A5/23 radios have a built-in voice
recorder if that's important to you.
In my humble opinion, the best bang for the buck right now is the
JHP-500.
Feel free to contact me if you have any other specific questions.
